“When you cease to make a contribution, you begin to die” (Eleanor Roosevelt)

Eleanor Roosevelt could have had Samantha Powell in mind when she made that remark.

A NAGLREP Social Spotlight by Darla Michelsen

Sam Powell is a Realtor serving Chicago and the suburbs

The energy coming from Samantha Powell could light up a city. She started out working for a company that bought commercial credit, so she spent all day watching TV commercials for quality control. Subsequently Sam became a real estate broker and has been in the industry 13 years.

Darla Michelsen: Why did you choose to become a Real Estate Broker?

Sam Powell: The company where I worked was downsized after 9/11 so my position was eliminated. I started to work freelance, then worked for a green screen company where I got to meet presidents and some very cool people. I did design work there. I also have a Degree in Photography and image restoration. A good buddy of mine was also downsized and decided to get his Real Estate License. He suggested I get into it. I checked it out like a college course, just a learning experience for myself. And I fell in love with being a piece of the process. Sort of like an educator and a project manager- to help people make informed decisions about buying a home.

DM: What is a social cause you are passionate about?

SP: Volunteerism. I do a drive in my condo building to collect toys, food and books that go to different associations to distribute. Also, I volunteer for the Women’s Association of Realtors and Chicago’s Force Football.

DM: What are your hobbies or what do you do with your free time?

SP: Volunteering! Full time! We get the family and friends involved, so it’s a great way to spend time with each other and it’s all for the greater good.
DM: Sam’s involvement in volunteering is like having 3 full time jobs, and she is passionate about it all… She needs to run for public office!

DM: What are 3 things about you that most people wouldn't know?

SP: I hate exercise and I hate exercise and I hate exercise!

DM: If you could sing one song on American Idol what would it be?

SP: WHAT?! I’d sing “Kidnap the Santa Claws” from “ The Nightmare Before Christmas”.

DM: If you could have any person dead or alive over to dinner, who would it be and what would you serve?

SP: I’d have my younger brother who’s passed away. We’d have his favorite beer and hot tamales and anything he’d want to eat!

DM: What is your Super Power?

SP: Sarcasm.

DM: What is your Kryptonite?

SP: Anyone who plays a victim.

DM: Answer this question: Before I die I would like to…

SP: I’d travel the world and go to as many factories as I can to see how things are made! There’s a website for that!

Sam’s passion for giving back to her community and industry is a powerful force. Where does this energy come from? Does she drink dozens of Red Bulls or eat candy all day- or is she super human? I have to say “WOW” thinking of Samantha Powell.
