Kindness to Others is the Music of Life
Maura started her career exercising her creativity as a professional folk blues singer and says she sings in the key of basement. She has recorded a couple of her own albums as well as opening for many well-known artists such as Joan Rivers, John Denver, and Loretta Lynn to name a few.
As she was preforming on the tours she was also working for United Airlines for over 17 years which kept her very busy and on the go.
She gave all that up and put down the microphone to focus on having a very active Real Estate business as a relocation specialist in the DC area for the past 16 years. Maura made this decision after a friend talked to her about how her skills with people would work well in the field of Real Estate and she should look into it, so she took some classes and found that she was hooked and jumped into her new career.
After a couple of real life learning experiences as a new agent she finally landed in a place where she could grow and feel herself. Maura also learned that she had something to offer newbies as a mentor and enjoys sharing her knowledge and skills. In talking to her even for a short time it was clear that she is a very open person and we spoke about some of our experiences getting into the business and coming across some unique situations. I got a strong feeling of trust and a certain level of comfort that you only get from someone who has her type of spirit and commitment. I know I could say with confidence that Maura does deliver on her word to provide a unique and joyful experience in all she does.
Darla Michelsen: What is a creative Real Estate agent to you?
Maura Sullivan: I think it is really understanding the reasons behind why they are buying and selling as well as anything unique to their situation and being a step ahead by presenting mindful solutions and an experience based really on knowing the why and just listening.
DM: What is it that you love most about the area that you live and work?
MS: My father was in the Navy and we traveled all around the world so I had the opportunity to live in many different places but I would have to say that I always had a fondness for Virginia, even when I lived and worked in D.C. I always loved it. There are its traffic issues, but it is such a beautiful State and there are many wonderful people who live here and the people are what I love most about it!
DM: What are three things no one would know about you?
MS: I’m an avid golfer, I love to cook and create recipes, and I write children’s books.
DM: I would love to hear more about the Children’s book!
MS: My first book was published last year called Marty the Dolphin’s Great Day Adventure. it’s a series I’m working on about a 4 year old Dolphin and his adventures as he travels around the world with his family. I interviewed illustrators from around the world until I found Jay who understood the heart of Marty and he is just incredible to work with on my books.
DM: If you could sing one song on American Idol what would it be? It's the first time I’ve asked a professional singer this question so you should know this? Right?
MS: God bless the child, and old song
DM: What is your super power?
MS: Understanding my client’s needs
DM: What is your kryptonite?
MS: Rudeness for sure and also I feel so strongly that we have become so disconnected. I see people text each other when they are sitting across from one another, recalling an experience I observed in a restaurant and then they began an argument over the text. It’s just crazy!!!
DM: If you could do any other job other than what you do now what would it be?
MS: a writer
DM: Well it sounds like you are doing that now and why not do it all.
DM: If you could shadow anyone for a day in any profession who would it be?
MS: I would love to shadow a master carpenter and my reason would be to watch someone create something of beauty that will last forever, like a piece of furniture where people appreciate the energy and skill that went into making it, and that they want to continue to feel the energy and pass it down to their family for generations, that would be a awesome experience for me.
DM: Well that makes total sense because you are an artist and all the artists I know being one myself understand the energy that each creation carries with it and there is something very special about watching the process.
DM: If money wasn’t an issue and you had tons of it, what would you like to do to help any cause?
MS: I would love to help build more No Kill shelters for animals that have lots of space to give the animals room to run and play and be happy.
DM: If someone wrote a book about you what would the title be?
MS: Seriously? Ha ha
Maura applies her creative spirit in everything she does and she has followed that path her entire life in the work she has done and the people she has touched with her music, her book and how she treats other people. I could feel her sincern passion in the stories she shared and I can tell you she is the real deal.
