We are a mission driven trade organization that is part business and part advocacy for equality, sustainable homeownership and the wealth and stability it affords not only the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender community, but all American families.
The United States Census Bureau has announced that 2010 will be the first decennial census in which counts of both same-sex spouses and same-sex unmarried partners will be publicly released. In the past, they combined these two groups and reported them as same-sex "unmarried partners". The modern American family is changing before our eyes. The geographical diversity of where gay and lesbian families are living is striking. From big cities to small farming towns, from the deep South to the Pacific Northwest, gay and lesbian families are part of the American landscape. Studies on the total number of gay and lesbian individuals in the United States show a range from 5 percent to 10 percent of the total population, and gay and lesbian families live in 99.3 percent of all counties in the United States.
We are the voice of many LGBT families that dream of owning a home and raising their children in stable, safe and attractive neighborhoods. It is our job to remind leaders in the business, policy and regulatory arenas that all hard working families are entitled to the American dream of homeownership.
It is important we show leaders in the business community the significance of the buying power of the LGBT community. With an estimated population of more than 15 million, and buying power of $700 billion, the LGBT community is a major contributor to the growth of todays housing market.
